This holiday season, Rooterville Animal Sanctuary is filled with the spirit of love and gratitude, and no animals embody this spirit more than our beloved cows, Tinsel and Holly. Their journey is both heartbreaking and inspiring, reminding us why sanctuaries like ours are so important.
Tinsel and Holly came into this world under heartbreaking circumstances. Born on a dairy farm, they were taken from their mother just hours after birth. This is a common practice in the dairy industry, where calves are separated to ensure their mother’s milk can be used for production. Too weak to walk on their own, Tinsel and Holly were sent to an auction and discarded into the “dead pile,” a place for animals deemed too sick, weak, or injured to sell.
In most cases, the “dead pile” is where their story would have ended, but fate had other plans. Rescuers happened to be at the auction that day. They noticed Tinsel and Holly still alive amidst the suffering and asked if they could take them. To the auctioneer, they were just trash, so the calves were handed over without hesitation.
What happened next was nothing short of a Christmas miracle. The rescuers nursed Tinsel and Holly back to health and brought them to Rooterville, where they’ve lived happily for 15 years. Now, at nearly 16 years old, they are among the sanctuary’s most beloved residents, cherished by everyone who meets them.
Tinsel, a massive black-and-white cow, has a presence that is impossible to ignore. Despite his size, he is known for his gentle and affectionate demeanor. Visitors who come for cow cuddling sessions often find themselves drawn to Tinsel, describing the experience as magical.
Sadly, Tinsel has recently been diagnosed with cancer, and we know his time with us is limited. But he continues to bring joy to everyone who meets him, proving that even in difficult times, love and connection can shine brightly.
By Tinsel’s side is Holly, a beautiful black cow with a kind heart, quiet strength, and the softest coat in the entire herd. Her velvety fur and regal demeanor earned her the title of “Queen of the Pasture.” She carries herself with grace, yet her gentle and affectionate nature makes her approachable and lovable.
The bond between Tinsel and Holly is heartwarming. They’ve spent their lives together, offering comfort and companionship to each other and to every visitor who has had the privilege of meeting them.
Tinsel and Holly’s story is a reminder of the harsh realities of factory farming, where animals like them are often seen as disposable. On factory farms, cows typically live only 3-5 years. But thanks to sanctuaries like Rooterville and the kindness of people like you, Tinsel and Holly have been able to live full, happy lives, surrounded by love and care.
We would love to invite you to meet Tinsel and Holly in person. Spend time cuddling with Tinsel, soaking in his warmth and gentle spirit, and sharing special moments with Holly. It’s an experience that will leave you with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for these amazing animals.
