    The Healing Power of Plants

    It’s almost that time of year again: cold and flu season. In just a few months, everyone around you will be sneezing, sniffling, and coughing. The best way to avoid getting sick in these next few months is simple; Adopt a plant-based diet. Plant-based healing is a great way to treat and prevent illnesses. Unlike the average omnivore, plant-powered people rarely get sick.

    My Plant-Based Journey

    Before I switched to a plant-based diet, I was sick most of the time. Whatever bug came around, I’d get it TWICE! My allergies were so bad, allergy shots did nothing for me and I was on two prescription medications just to manage. I accepted my illnesses as being normal, and I prepared myself to spend the rest of my life sick and carrying around my inhaler. Every doctor I saw offered no hope, only the grim reality that my conditions would only worsen as I got older. Sound familiar?

    Changing Your Diet

    Why is a plant-based diet so good for your body? It’s so simple when you stop to think about it. The human body requires certain nutrients to function optimally. Plant-based nutrients from whole, unprocessed fruits, vegetables, and grains can give you all of the nutrition your body needs, without the harmful side effects of animal products or processed foods. The average American’s diet is over 20% animal products, and over 40% processed foods. You know the saying “You are what you eat”? Throughout my plant-based journey, I learned how true this sentiment is. If you eat unnatural and unhealthy animal products and other processed foods, you will be unnatural and unhealthy too.

    Why Plant-Based?

    You may have heard of other diets that claim to be the cure for all illnesses, or the easiest way to weight loss. Why is eating plant-based better than any other fad diet?

    Your immune and digestive systems are both powered by the healthy bacteria living in your gut. This bacteria regulates the immune and digestive systems, sending signals to your brain that either all is well or that a problem is on the rise. When you eat a plant-based diet, this healthy bacteria thrives and notifies your brain that everything is as it should be. Eating animal products and other processed foods sends your body into dysfunction by killing off the healthy bacteria and allowing infectious bacteria to enter our systems. When your diet consists of primarily meat and processed foods, you are never allowing your body to rebuild the healthy bacteria and you are instead letting the bad bacteria rein free.

    Food and Medicine

    The average American diet is based heavily on the consumption of animal products and processed foods. These foods create a myriad of health issues, ranging from the common cold to advanced forms of cancer. In response to the influx of sick Americans, Western medicine focuses on treating symptoms rather than preventing illness. There are no financial incentives in health and wellness; Doctors have no patients to treat, and pharmaceutical companies no medications to manufacture. Most students graduating from medical school feel they have received inadequate training on nutrition, and are instead encouraged to deal with illnesses based on symptoms.

    Research has shown that eating a plant-based diet is the best way to treat and prevent illnesses. What you eat does affect your health.

    What Can You Do?

    The best thing you can do for your body is make the switch to a completely plant-based diet, and doing so is easier now more than ever. I healed my illnesses through the power of plants, and I encourage you to do the same.  There are wonderful cook books to help make amazing plant food dishes and for the transition, there are even mock meats that taste almost identical to animal foods but without all of the saturated fat, antibiotics, hormones and growth promoters found in meat, milk and eggs. Why not give it a go and see for yourself?

    Let me warn you, it takes 21 days for your tastes to change and an even longer time to bring your gut flora back to health. During the transition, you could feel ill, find yourself with more gas than normal in your gut and even get headaches.
